Story Summary: Return From Troy, Episode 2

On this page we have split the telling of this episode into its two main sections and provided a summary of each.

Warriors seeking a welcome (5:17)

Odysseus introduces himself and tells his own story. He recalls how the birth of his son Telemachus changed his view of war. Odysseus pretended to be mad to avoid having to leave home to fight. But the lieutenant matched him in cunning and he was found out. He reminds us that it was he who finished the siege of Troy with a great wooden horse. Setting sail for home with a shipload of treasure he dreams that he will soon arrive to a hero’s welcome. Odysseus sails until he sees a friendly-looking island. He chooses twelve of the crew to go ashore with him. They search the island, taking with them treasure to exchange for animals and water. They make their way into a cave where they find young goats and sheep, cheese, milk and a fire.

An unfriendly host (3:40)

Soon a flock of goats and sheep enters the cave and the men, hiding at the back, see before them a huge one-eyed creature. They offer to exchange their precious things with him and ask him to help them in the name of father Zeus. The creature declares that he is a Cyclops, a son of the sea god Poseidon, and has no respect for Zeus. To make his point he kills and eats one of the men. They need to escape but if Odysseus and his men kill the Cyclops his huge body will block the cave. They are trapped!
