Story Summary: War with Troy, Episode 4

On this page we have split the telling of this episode into its two main sections and provided a summary of each.

General battle scene

The Trojans’ secret weapon (4:23)

The Greeks are immediately attacked by the Trojans who bear down upon them. Amidst the Trojans is one warrior who stands out, Cygnus, the son of Poseidon. He is distinguished by being white all over (white hair, white eyes, white lips) and he is invulnerable to all weapons. How can the Trojans lose? Achilles sees Cygnus from his ship, and despite being warned by his magical talking horses that he will die if he goes to fight against the Trojans, he goes into battle, putting fame before life.

Achilles makes his mark (5:26)

Achilles and Cygnus reach each other and fight man-to-man. Cygnus mocks Achilles for being unable to harm him with his weapons, so Achilles attacks Cygnus with his armour instead and finally strangles Cygnus to death. But Poseidon takes pity on his son Cygnus and at the moment of his death changes him into a white swan. The Trojans having witnessed the savagery of Achilles are terrified of him. They turn around and flee back to the city of Troy, seeking safety inside the city’s great walls and gates.
