On this page we have split the telling of this episode into its two main sections and provided a summary of each.

Achilles' new armour

Track 6: Zeus awakes (4:38)

Patroclus, wearing Achilles’ armour, drives all the Trojans out of the Greek camp and right back to the city of Troy. Even Hector flees. Zeus wakes up to find his plan in disarray. He sees Hera and Athene, the two Trojan-hating goddesses, urging the Greeks onwards against the Trojans. Furious, Zeus orders them off the battlefield and commands Trojan-loving Apollo to help Hector and the Trojans. Hector, inspired by Apollo, summons the courage to go out again from the safety of Troy and face his enemy. Hector kills Patroclus.

Track 7: Hephaestus to the rescue (6:15)

Achilles is overcome with grief at the death of his close friend Patroclus. He vows to kill Hector in revenge, but first he needs armour. Achilles’ mother, Thetis, visits the god of metalworking, Hephaestus, and persuades him to make a magnificent new suit of armour for Achilles.
