Story Summary: War With Troy, Episode 9

On this page we have split the telling of this episode into its three main sections and provided a summary of each.

Achilles and Hector

Back to the battlefield (5:33)

Achilles straps on his new armour and goes in search of Hector. All the Trojan army has retreated inside the walls of Troy — all except Hector who is deaf to the pleas of his father, mother and wife who, from the top of the walls, beg him to come inside the city. He waits to face up in battle to Achilles. But when he sees Achilles rushing towards him, panic seizes Hector and he runs around the walls of Troy, chased by Achilles.

Hector’s fate in the balance (3:15)

Zeus weighs the luck of Hector and the luck of Achilles, and when Hector’s luck sinks down his fate is sealed. He is tricked to stand and fight by Trojan-hating Athene who has assumed the shape of Hector’s brother, Deiphobus. The great duel between Hector and Achilles begins, but when Hector looks for help from Deiphobus, he — or rather Athene — has gone, and Hector is killed by Achilles.

A friend honoured (4:16)

Achilles, still seething with hatred of Hector for killing Patroclus, ties Hector’s dead body to his chariot and drags it three times around the city walls as a sign of disrespect. Achilles then rides back into the Greek camp, Hector’s body still attached to his chariot. He cremates the body of Patroclus but leaves Hector’s body unburied.
