Story Summary: War With Troy, Episode 10

On this page we have split the telling of this episode into its two main sections and provided a summary of each.

Priam and AchillesIn the enemy camp (6:15)

Though Hecuba thinks Priam has gone mad, Priam decides to go to see Hector’s killer, Achilles, and to beg for the return of Hector’s body. He takes his daughter Polyxena with him and a cart loaded with gold. With a god’s help they enter the Greek camp unseen and enter Achilles’ tent. Priam begs Achilles to take pity on a father grieving for his dead son; and to give Hector’s body to him for proper burial in return for Hector’s weight in gold.

Achilles relents — at a price (6:59)

Achilles is moved to tears by the old man’s pleas. Realising that both he himself and Hector share the same fate, of being cursed by the gods, Achilles agrees to let Priam take Hector’s body back to Troy, for the ransom of Hector’s weight in gold. Scales are brought, the gold is measured out and Priam takes possession of Hector’s body. But before Priam and Polyxena leave, Achilles invites them to share a meal. Achilles falls in love with Polyxena. Achilles guarantees a break in the fighting when the Trojans celebrate funeral games and bury Hector.
