Story Summary: War With Troy, Episode 11

On this page we have split the telling of this episode into its two main sections and provided a summary of each.

The death of Achilles

Secrets revealed (6:12)

Fighting resumes but Achilles longs for Polyxena and writes to her. They secretly meet. But Apollo and Aphrodite, supporters of the Trojans, see the lovers and urge Paris, Polyxena’s brother, to sneak up on them and catch Achilles off his guard. Paris follows his sister and spies her meeting with Achilles. He overhears Achilles tell Polyxena why he is unharmed after all the fighting — he is invulnerable except on his heel. Paris immediately fires an arrow at Achilles’ heel and, with help from Apollo, fatally wounds him.

Last rites for Achilles (5:59)

Odysseus retrieves Achilles’ body and brings it back to the Greek camp. Achilles’ mother, Thetis, comes to the camp and cremates her son. As the fire burns, Thetis remembers the gifts given to her and Peleus on their wedding day. In Achilles’ tent she finds the urn given by Hades and after placing the ashes of Achilles and Patroclus in the urn, buries it on a headland overlooking the sea.
